Discussion Guide: Table Talk - The Table of Recognition

Welcome to Table Talk!

Food has a unique way of bringing down our walls. Throughout the Gospels, some of the most profound moments of grace, healing, and connection didn't happen in synagogues or on mountain tops—they happened around a dinner table.

This guide is designed to be used alongside our Table Talk sermon series. Whether you’re sitting down with your family over dinner, sharing coffee with a friend, or connecting with a small group or roommate, these pages are meant to help you take Sunday’s message off the stage and into your everyday life.

How to Use This Guide:

  • Keep it casual: There is no "right" way to do this. You don't need to answer every question or read every word.

  • Make it fit your table: Use this over a full meal, a quick snack, or a cup of coffee.

  • Keep it conversational: Focus on open reflection rather than finding the "perfect" answer.

Grab a seat, pass the food, and let's pull up a chair to the table together!

Table Talk: The Table of Recognition

1. Set the Table (The Icebreaker)

What to do: Get the conversation flowing with a lighthearted question.

  • The Question: What is a time you didn't recognize someone you knew right away—maybe because they were in a strange place, dressed differently, or caught you completely off guard?

2. Take a Bite (The Story)

What to do: Set the scene and read the verses together.

  • The Scene: Two disciples were walking seven miles to the village of Emmaus, heartbroken and confused because Jesus had died. The resurrected Jesus walked up right beside them, but they didn't realize it was Him. He walked with them, listened to their grief, and explained the Scriptures. It wasn't until they finally sat down at the dinner table and Jesus broke the bread that their eyes were opened.

  • Read Together: Luke 24:13–35

3. Chew on It (The Discussion)

What to do: Choose the questions that best fit your conversation.

  • Question 1: The disciples were so caught up in their disappointment that they didn't realize Jesus was right beside them the whole time. What are some everyday things in our lives that make it hard for us to notice God at work?

  • Question 2: Even though Jesus knew the whole story, He started by asking them, "What are you discussing together as you walk along?" Why do you think Jesus took time to listen to their sadness before explaining things to them?

  • Question 3: Their eyes were finally opened in a simple, everyday moment—breaking bread together at the table. Where do you tend to feel most aware of God's presence in your ordinary daily routine?

4. Pass the Plate (The Action Step)

What to do: Turn the conversation into a concrete action for the week ahead.

  • The Challenge: Jesus walked alongside two grieving friends and gave them hope. This week, practice "walking alongside" someone who might be having a hard week.

  • Idea: Offer to grab a coffee or go for a walk with a friend who is going through a tough time, practice listening without jumping in to fix their problems, or pause before a meal to specifically thank God for where you've seen Him at work today.

5. Clear the Table (The Prayer)

What to do: Close your time together intentionally.

  • Pray together:"Jesus, thank You that You walk with us even when we are confused, sad, or slow to see You. Open our eyes to notice Your presence in our ordinary days and around our tables. Give us patient hearts to listen well to the people around us this week. Amen."
