Family Discussion: It’s a Love Story

On Friday, Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce said “I do.”
The superstar singer and 3-time Super Bowl champ got engaged last August. Since then, their wedding has been the talk of the town… and also a big question mark. Fans turned into amateur detectives, trying to figure out when, where, and how they’d tie the knot. And the couple worked hard to keep it secret (even sending fake invites to throw people off… allegedly).
Clues started popping up last week. Crews, some wearing TS merch, started unloading tarp-covered deliveries at Madison Square Garden. A permit was also filed to close the nearby streets from July 2 to July 4. Not to mention, anonymous sources spilled (some of) the beans.
Many fans still thought it might be a decoy… until the Garden’s billboards lit up with the official announcement: JUST&T MARRIED!
Tay and Trav’s fairytale wedding happened on July 3 with an A-List guest list of 1,000+ people. The varied roster featured actors, athletes, and artists, all of whom signed NDAs with their RSVPs, and were told to check their phones at the door. But, since the nuptials, guests have slowly started breaking the cone of silence on social media.
Taylor’s longtime publicist put out a statement sharing what the couple wore and revealing that Adam Sandler was their officiant. Instead of bridesmaids and groomsmen, Tayvis’s brothers stood in as Man of Honor and best man.
Still, fans are on the edges of their seats waiting for Taylor’s Version of the wedding recap.

What gospel lesson can be taught through this story?
The story of the Bible begins with a wedding in the Garden, and ends with a wedding in heaven (Revelation 19:7-9). The Church is often called the “bride of Christ,” and godly marriage is meant to be a picture of the Gospel lived out (Ephesians 5:25). This imagery isn’t an accident; marriage matters to God.
But human marriages and weddings will fail to live up to this picture. The world places importance on superficial things, like what the bride wore, and spouses fail to love each other because we are self-centered; but the good news of the Gospel is that Christ is the perfectly self-sacrificial and loving husband. As Romans 5:8 reminds us, “God proves his own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Now, that is worth remembering and celebrating.
Ask your kids what they have already heard about this story.
Rumors spread like wildfire, especially on social media and especially when it comes to our favorite celebrities. It’s okay to have fun thinking about decor, dresses, and guest lists, but we have to be careful not to let our minds become obsessed with the details of someone else’s life and drift into comparison.
Let your kids tell you about what they’ve heard. What details are grabbing their attention? What are some areas you can indulge in some good-natured fun with them (Ecclesiastes 9:7-10)? Where can you help them fix their minds more on things above (Colossians 3:2)?

Pray for the people around you who don’t know Christ, that they would come to understand his deep love for them and be saved.
