This Week’s Verse
“The bows of the mighty men are broken,
And those who stumbled are girded with strength.
Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread,
And the hungry have ceased to hunger.
Even the barren has borne seven,
And she who has many children has become feeble.”
— 1 Samuel 2:4-5 (NKJV)
Devotion
When Hannah prayed these words, she was standing in the house of the Lord at Shiloh, having just dedicated her long-awaited son, Samuel, back to God. Her heart was overflowing with gratitude. Out of that deep joy came a powerful song of praise that cuts straight to a truth we often forget: God has a way of completely turning our expectations upside down. He dismantles the self-sufficient and uplifts the brokenhearted.
Think about the images Hannah uses:
Strength vs. Weakness: The mighty, who lean entirely on their own power, eventually find their weapons broken. But when we stumble and admit we can't do it alone, God steps in to wrap us in His strength.
Wealth vs. Need: Those who place their security in money can lose it all in a moment, while those who come to God empty-handed find their real needs deeply satisfied.
Fruitfulness vs. Despair: Human effort and status can fade into exhaustion, yet God can bring vibrant life and joy out of our driest, most barren seasons.
Hannah’s prayer reminds us that drastic, life-altering change is always possible. The real question isn't how strong, successful, or capable we are on our own—it's who we choose to lean on. When we stop relying on our own resources and turn to God, He meets us right where we are.
Where in your life right now are you relying on your own strength, and what would it look like to hand that area over to God today?
