Encouragement for Your Week: September 6-12

This Week’s Verse

“Brothers and sisters, never get tired of doing good.”

—2 Thessalonians 3:13 (ERV)

Devotion

The Apostle Paul held a remarkably high view of daily labor. To him, work wasn't just a practical necessity; it was a fundamental responsibility of a faithful life. He firmly corrected those in the early church who chose idleness, going so far as to state that those unwilling to work shouldn't expect others to feed them.

Yet, Paul was also a realist. He understood that hard work is exhausting, and when our efforts feel unrewarded, complacency can easily set in. Anticipating this natural human fatigue, Paul offered a vital course-correction: do not grow weary in doing good. He modeled this stamina himself, choosing to labor for his own financial upkeep rather than burdening the Thessalonian church.

This principle extends far beyond our daily jobs—it is a cornerstone of Christian character. Paul's warning challenges us to maintain our integrity and energy in both our practical duties and our spiritual pursuits. Doing the right thing rarely offers a path of least resistance, and life seldom aligns perfectly with our expectations. When our best efforts yield disappointing results, discouragement inevitably creeps in. It becomes tempting to lower our standards, step back, or quit trying altogether. However, giving up only trades the temporary exhaustion of doing good for the deeper, long-term burdens of cynicism and regret.

When our internal resolve fails, we have to look beyond our own limited resources for stamina. True endurance isn't manufactured through sheer willpower; it is found by anchoring ourselves to the Creator. As the prophet Isaiah reminded God’s people, those who trust in the Lord will renew their strength; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not faint. When we hand our exhaustion over to God, He replaces our burnout with an endless supply of grace, giving us the fuel to keep moving forward.

In what area of your life right now—whether in a career, a difficult relationship, or your personal spiritual walk—are you feeling the most tempted to give up, and what is one practical way you can surrender that fatigue to God today?
