Encouragement for Your Week: March 8-14
This Week’s Verse
"Those who look to him for help will be radiant with joy; no shadow of shame will darken their faces."
— Psalm 34:5 (NLT)
Devotion
Have you ever caught your reflection in a mirror or store window when you didn’t know you were looking? Sometimes, we see a person who looks tired, worried, or even weighed down by a secret embarrassment. We like to think we’re good at hiding our feelings, but our faces are often the "front porch" of our souls. They tell the story of who we are trusting to get us through the day.
When life gets heavy, it’s easy to look inward at our own failures or outward at our mounting problems. But this verse gives us a different direction to look: Up.
We all have "God-substitutes"—things we lean on when we feel shaky. Maybe it’s your bank account, your reputation at work, or even just your own ability to "hustle." The problem is that these things eventually let us down. When they do, we don’t just feel stressed; we feel a sense of shame, like we’ve failed because we couldn't keep it all together.
But the psalmist tells us that looking to God changes our literal appearance. It doesn't mean your problems disappear or that you’ll never have a bad day. (A quick look at the rest of the Psalms shows that even the most faithful people felt deep sadness.) It means that when you trust God as your source, He gives you a "rock-bottom" joy. It’s the kind of peace that stays steady even when everything else is shaking.
There’s a specific kind of heat that comes to our faces when we’re ashamed—that "red" feeling of being caught in a mistake or feeling like we aren't enough. Many of us carry that shame around for years, letting it darken how we see ourselves.
The promise here is beautiful: God removes the shadow. When we turn to Him and ask for help, He doesn't just forgive us; He lifts our heads. He clears the condemnation we’ve heaped on ourselves. You don’t have to walk through life looking at the ground, apologizing for who you are. Because of His grace, you can look Him in the eye and find a smile waiting for you.
Today, take a deep breath and look up. You might find yourself smiling even when the world thinks you shouldn't have a reason to.
