Encouragement for Your Week: October 18-24
This Week’s Verse
“And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.”
— Colossians 1:9-10 ESV
Devotion
When Paul prayed for the believers in Colossae, he wasn't just asking for their general wellbeing—he was asking God to give them clear direction and deep spiritual wisdom. God speaks to us in so many ways: through the Bible, timely sermons, that quiet inner prompt of our conscience, and even the circumstances we walk through every day. But if we're honest, relying on our own instincts to figure it all out usually falls short. We need the Holy Spirit to clear the noise, open our eyes, and help us actually recognize God's voice.
Without the Spirit guiding our hearts, it's easy to wander in the dark, missing what God is doing right in front of us (2 Corinthians 4:4). Paul knew that even the best sermons couldn't change a heart on their own. That’s why he prayed so earnestly for the Holy Spirit to do what only He can do: open our minds from the inside out.
When you invite the Spirit to guide your daily steps, everything changes:
You walk with purpose. Instead of just getting through the day, your choices begin to naturally reflect God's heart and bring Him real joy.
Your life yields lasting results. We often try to force things in our own strength, but Jesus reminds us that apart from Him, we can't build anything of true eternal value (John 15:5). The Spirit helps your effort produce genuine, meaningful fruit.
You get to know God personally. Faith stops being a list of rules or head knowledge about a distant God. Instead, you begin to experience Him in a real, intimate, day-to-day relationship.
Where in your life right now are you relying on your own strength or understanding, and how can you hand that area over to the Holy Spirit today?
