Encouragement for Your Week: October 11-17

This Week’s Verse

“Whoever trusts in his own mind is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom will be delivered.”

— Proverbs 28:26 (ESV)

Devotion

It is so easy to fall into the trap of thinking we have everything figured out. We rely on our instincts, map out our own plans, and push forward on our own terms. But Proverbs 28:26 gives us a gentle reality check: relying solely on our own understanding is a fast track to foolishness.

The Apostle Paul talks about this internal struggle in Romans 8:6, framing it as a choice between letting our "flesh"—our self-centered human nature—run the show, or letting the Holy Spirit guide our steps. When I try to manage life entirely on my own strength and intellect, I usually wind up frustrated, anxious, or headed in the wrong direction. That self-reliant mindset isolates us from God and leads to dead ends.

Walking in wisdom, on the other hand, means making room for the Spirit in our everyday decisions. When we invite God into our thinking, our minds shift from serving our own immediate desires to aligning with His bigger plan. It takes humility to pause, step back, and ask for His guidance, but that surrender brings a profound sense of peace and direction.

We face this fork in the road every single day. We can hold tightly to the steering wheel and demand our own way, or we can release control to the One who actually knows the road ahead. Choosing God's wisdom doesn't mean we lose our mind; it means our mind is finally anchored in life and truth.

Where in your life right now are you holding onto the steering wheel, and what would it take to hand that area over to the Holy Spirit today?
