Encouragement for Your Week: July 26-Aug. 1
This Week’s Verse
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
— 1 John 1:7 (ESV)
Devotion
The Christian life is frequently described as a journey or a walk. Specifically, it is a walk in the light rather than in the darkness. This imagery does not imply that you must achieve sinless perfection to follow Christ; if absolute perfection were the standard, no one could qualify. Instead, walking in the light means that the overall direction of your life is guided by the Holy Spirit, and your daily patterns align with God’s will and God’s Word.
When we choose this illuminated path, we enter into deep fellowship with God, who is described just a few verses earlier as being light itself (1 John 1:5). This shared path also connects us with other believers. When our relationship with God is healthy, our relationships with fellow Christians naturally follow suit. While believers will still experience moments of conflict or alienation, a shared spiritual direction creates a strong foundation for genuine community.
Furthermore, walking in the light ensures that the blood of Jesus continuously cleanses us from sin. Even as we strive to live in the light, we still stumble and require ongoing forgiveness. This is why John later emphasizes the importance of confessing our sins so that God can faithfully forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). This continuous cleansing reflects our true identity: we are children of the light and of the day, no longer belonging to the darkness.
Let’s thank God for His guidance, His enduring mercy, and the meaningful community He provides through fellowship with other believers.
What is one specific area of your life where you are tempted to pull back into the shadows, and how can you actively bring that area into the light of God's truth and community this week?
