Psalm 71 captures the voice of King David in the twilight of his life. Writing during a season of deep personal trouble—likely the rebellion of his own son, Absalom—David gives words to the quiet anxieties that often accompany aging. He speaks of the fear of becoming vulnerable, the worry of being overlooked, and the stinging possibility of losing his honor as his physical strength fades.

At the heart of David’s prayer is a plea for presence. Having relied on God since his youth, he cries out, "Do not cast me away when I am old; do not forsake me when my strength is gone" (Psalm 71:9). David knew that while his body might be failing, his need for the Divine was only growing.

David’s request for a longer life wasn't rooted in vanity or a fear of death. He wasn't asking for more time just to enjoy the comforts of the palace; he was asking for more time to testify. He felt a profound responsibility to bridge the gap between his experiences and the future of his people. He refused to exit the stage until he had fully declared God’s "mighty acts" to those coming up behind him.

Like a tree that continues to "bear fruit in old age" and "stay fresh and green" (Psalm 92:14), David wanted his final years to be his most impactful. He understood that the next generation needed more than just his inheritance; they needed his story. They needed to hear how God had sustained him through every valley so that they, too, would know how to walk with faith.

Perhaps you feel the weight of the years catching up to you, or maybe you are simply reflecting on the "looming end" of a specific season of life. Like David, you may feel there is still something essential you need to leave behind—a lesson, a blessing, or a story of grace.

Your mission does not expire when your hair turns gray or your pace slows down. This week, ask God for the strength to finish the work He has placed on your heart. Seek the peace that comes from knowing your life is a message intended for someone else’s future.
